Challenges - Awareness - Know-How

Expatriation and repatriation are highly relevant topics in times of global mobility. In our panel discussion on the 11th of November, four experts in the field discussed major challenges and came up with specific recommendations for companies and institutions on how to handle expatriate management in today's constantly changing climate.


PWN Vienna was hosted by BDO Austria and supported by Relocation Services Strohmayer GmbH. Thanks to the panelists Ulrike Butschek (Austrian Foreign Service), Michaela Buttazzoni (Senior Manager New Placement at BDO), Katja Reichl (Senior Manager Tax at BDO), Erika Strohmayer (Owner of Relocation Services Strohmayer) and to our PWN Vienna president Karin Schreiner, who moderated the panel discussion.


Michaela Buttazzoni, a senior consultant at BDO Austria GmbH, has a strong expertise in international HR management in both operational and consulting areas. She started her HR career at Dr. Helmut Neumann Management Beratung, gained broad HR experience at Coca-Cola GmbH in Expatriate Management, Comp & Ben and in the development of an European Expatriate Competence Center. She was the HR Director for Austria and the Czech Republic for ZARA Clothing. For the past 10 years, she has been passionately and successfully working in the field of outplacement, career and separation transitions. She used her knowledge & experience in outplacement to establish this field at BDO People & Organisation Consulting.


Katja Reichl is a Tax Advisor and Senior Manager at BDO Austria GmbH. Her main areas of professional work are: international tax law, global mobility services, national and international security law, and payroll services. Katja is also a member of the Expert Committee for Labour and Social Law in Austria. She writes professional articles and hold lectures in her field.


Erika Strohmayer is the owner of Relocation Services Strohmayer. When she moved with her family to California, she came across the idea of relocation services. Back to Vienna in 1991, she founded Relocation Services Strohmayer as the very first supplier in this field in Austria. Her company is a member of TIRA – The International Relocation Associates and provides a high standard in quality and services. In 2011, her company was awarded with the EuRA Global Quality Seal which has to be renewed every two years. http://www.relocation-services.at/en/


Mag. Ulrike Butschek, returned back to Vienna after several years of expatriation. She now works at the Department for Security Policy at the Austrian Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs. Before that, she was Deputy Head of Mission at the Austrian Embassy in Paris, France, 2015-2019, and Deputy Head of Mission and Director of the Cultural Forum at the Austrian Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, 2011-2015.
